Libra New Moon, 2007

Libra the Scales Peace and Justice

Imagine Peace.

For without that inner vision, there will be none.

This year's Libra New Moon on October 10 presents us with a beautiful warp and woof to weave peace into the cosmic loom, simply by imagining it.

In many ways we create our realities with our imaginations, not because we possess magical powers, but rather because we are able to react to the situations in which we find ourselves according to the ways in which we have consciously or subconsciously programmed our thought patterns, our imaginations.

As Oscar Wilde wrote: "We are all living in the gutter, but some of us are looking up at the stars." -- Lady Windemere's Fan, Act III, 1892.

It's a Neptune thing.

If ever there were a powerful Neptunian moment for envisioning peace, this October 10 would be it.

When I speak of this Libra New Moon, I choose to envision the ideal of peace. I do not refer to the always popular group-think, or art of equivocation that would word-paint our dedicated peace activists as crazy or proclaim in Orwellian doublethink that war is peace. No, that is not the Libra moment to which I refer.

The Libra moment to which I refer would dare us to think the unthinkable: that our dissidents are the most sane and courageous among us, that we routinely block out the truth of the suffering of the majority of the people on the planet because we prefer to be comfortable rather than to acknowledge the reality of the poor.

As William Fulbright, the late Senator from Arkansas wrote in his 1967 book, The Arrogance of Power:

We must dare to think "unthinkable" thoughts. We must learn to explore all the options and possibilities that confront us in a complex and rapidly changing world. We must learn to welcome and not to fear the voices of dissent. We must dare to think about "unthinkable things" because when things become unthinkable, thinking stops and action becomes mindless.

Senator Fulbright, who also promoted a foreign policy of what he called "peaceful coexistence" between nations, was warning us against drifting into nuclear war because of a failure to acknowledge its clear and present danger. Because of a failure of the imagination and a failure of courage, we can drift into the unthinkable. He was telling us to be different, to value dissent, and to avoid the unthinking obedience that leads to catastrophe.

We are in such a moment now, when we need to renew our humanitarian vision of peace and to actively work toward making that vision a reality.

The Libra Full Moon of October 10, 2007 presents us with the perfect opportunity to use the mutually receptive energy of Uranus in Pisces and Neptune in Aquarius to change the course of history simply by envisioning peace.

The Chart

Looking at the chart, we see a beautiful grand trine in water, consisting of the North Node of the Moon and Uranus in Pisces trine Mars in Cancer and Mercury in Scorpio. This energy easily enables us to wash away any negativity that may be lurking in our subconscious feelings and to transform our emotional flow toward positively envisioning the future.

Mercury in Scorpio will soon be going retrograde, so we must give our conscious minds a rest while we do this inner cleansing and reprogramming during the second half of October.

Venus has moved to conjunct Saturn in Virgo, so we are able to create some beautiful and lasting structures in work and service. Saturn is conjunct the South Node of the Moon, so it won't do to become compulsively organized or clean or critical.

Instead, we can easily reach for the Pisces North Node and allow Neptune at the 20th degree of Aquarius be our guide.

Neptune forms an easy trine to the New Moon at the 18th degree of Libra, giving us an ideal belief in balancing the scales for the good of humanity. Legal matters should go well: we can adjust the scales of the law and the balance of society in ideal ways. For example, several recent court cases have struck down some of the more Draconian measures of domestic spying on ordinary citizens, as well as the denial of Habeus Corpus to detainees under certain legally questionable provisions of the Homeland Security Act. If the police want to bring people before the law, they must do it properly, say the judges.

Jupiter and Pluto in Sagittarius are squaring Uranus in Pisces, but since Neptune, the ruler of Pisces, is also the co-ruler of Sagittarius, and Neptune in Aquarius is still in mutual reception to Uranus in Pisces, we have no situations that cannot be resolved through changing our perspective to honor "the other," whether the situations be in personal or political matters.

Furthermore, Venus conjunct Saturn has a Libra quality to it, since Saturn is exalted in Libra; therefore, we are easily enabled at this time to set our wills toward working for peace and justice, and toward bringing to bear the rule of law upon those in public office who have violated their oaths to uphold the Constitution.
